Mid winter stitching

 

It’s midwinter here in Australia.

Heading to the shortest day of the year but there is still a bit 

of sunshine

so I’m taking every opportunity to sit by the window and stitch.

Recent work

 Ah, blogger. The last time I posted after a long break it was all too easy. This morning it won’t let me type anything so now I am editing the post I just made! 

This quilt is a collation of lots of left over pieces from other projects. I was inspired by the quilt in

“Unexpected and Unconventional. American Quilts Below the Radar”

I was rearranging my scraps the other day

and decided to make some 1" strips

and then do something with them.

So satisfying.

And then one tiny pin cushion,

then two...

 I just can't help myself.

Making these little pictures is so addictive.

the two above are not quite completed as I think I need to add some detail.

 I have the scraps are spread out on my sewing table and I start fiddling on yet another one.

And two does not make a series. 

So here is a third one.

These are about the size of your old panorama printed photos.

Latest tea cosy

This would have to be my favourite so far.

 

 

I am really enjoying making my tea cosies again. Why?

They allow me to work in a series (people give materclasses on that).

I work freehand making decisions as I go.

I love needle turn appliqué.

I am testing out various threads for quilting.

They are portable.

While not that quick they don't take that long and who doesn't like a finished project?

And it allows me to venture into Etsy in a small way.

Name suggestion?

I have to say that I am quite pleased with my latest completion.

It has taken quite few years.

I love it when people say:

"and how long did it take you?"

Well they won't be disappointed this time.

Why does a quilt need a name anyway?

Like children?

So you can keep track of them?

Any suggestion?

snapshots

I like to think of these as snaps shots taken out the car window while driving in the country. 

They are about the size of photos when I was a child,

or like trading cards.

But I want to sell them not trade them.

boro

Boro is a term much used these days.

In Japanese it refers to cloth that is in rags, tattered and mended.

I am reluctant to call what I do boro

but it is mending.

Stitching

In case you were wondering about me..

Mostly I have been working on this.

Slow stitching.

Machine sewing....

Lots of machining

and now the top is done

and basted, but that doesn't make such a good photo.

And I made another tea cosy!

it's about time

 It's about time I got around to finishing this quilt.

I started it many years ago but found it just too difficult and so only made one block. Then some time later I found that I had cut out most of the pieces to make four blocks and so got that far.

But then what to do?

So indecision has ruled.

Then about a year ago I added then saw-tooth border and then reached another standstill.

 And then recently I thought stars! 

Stars might work. 

I didn't want to overpower the centre blocks but if I chose carefully....

You see I am using old Japanese fabric from futons and what I have is limited and it's not like I can pop down to the patchwork shop and get some more.

So far so good?
